D.C.-area forecast: Today’s heat could be record-setting, and it will be warm all week

2 weeks ago 12

A somewhat subjective rating of the day’s weather, on a scale of 0 to 10.

4/10: I like warm weather, but 92 in April is too hot, too soon.

  • Today: Mostly sunny and hot. Highs: 87 to 92.
  • Tonight: Mostly clear and warm. Lows: 60 to 67.
  • Tomorrow: Partly sunny with afternoon-evening showers and storms. Highs: 85 to 90.

The switch flipped to summer Sunday, and highs should be above normal every day this week. Today is the hottest of the bunch, with many spots likely to hit 90. Tomorrow we could hit 90 for a second straight day before late-day showers and storms help knock temperatures down a notch. But highs between Wednesday and Sunday should still be pretty close to 80.

Today (Monday): The sun beats down and temperatures sprint upward. Afternoon highs range from the upper 80s to low 90s. Records will be threatened at all three airports. Here are the numbers to beat:

  • Reagan National Airport: 91
  • Dulles International Airport: 89
  • Baltimore-Washington International Marshall Airport: 91

A light breeze from the west just over 5 mph does little to cool us off. Fortunately, humidity isn’t too bad with dew points near 60. Confidence: Medium-high

Tonight: It’s like a summer night with a soft southerly breeze and balmy temperatures. Predicted overnight lows aren’t too far from the normal daytime highs (in the low 70s). Lows range from near 60 in our cooler suburbs to the upper 60s downtown. Confidence: Medium-high

Tomorrow (Tuesday): It’s another unseasonably warm one as highs climb from 85 to 90. Mostly sunny skies become mostly cloudy in the afternoon, with scattered showers and storms a good bet toward evening. It’s possible that not everyone will see storms, but some downpours and lightning are reasonably likely in parts of the area. Right now, the chance of severe storms seems low. Confidence: Medium-high

Tomorrow night: Any showers and storms should quickly zip off to the east after dark, though some clouds will linger overnight as a weak cool front is slow to push eastward. Lows are mostly in the 60s. Confidence: Medium-high

Although we can’t rule out a shower Wednesday, mainly in our eastern areas, most of the period between Wednesday and Friday is dry and pleasantly warm. Skies are partly sunny each day with highs pretty close to 80. Lows Wednesday and Thursday nights are mostly in the 50s. Confidence: Medium-high

It remains warm over the weekend, but a weak, slow-moving front in our vicinity could serve as the focus of a shower or two Friday night and both weekend days. The best chance of showers would be in the afternoon or evening. Highs both days should range from 75 to 80, with overnight lows near 60. Confidence: Medium
