D.C.-area forecast: Scattered severe storms possible this afternoon and evening

2 weeks ago 14

A somewhat subjective rating of the day’s weather, on a scale of 0 to 10.

4/10: A lot of the day will be dry, but the mugginess, the clouds and the chance of severe storms mean a subpar score.

  • Today: Variable clouds. Showers and storms possible. Highs: 80 to 85.
  • Tonight: Scattered evening storms; otherwise mostly cloudy. Lows: 60 to 65.
  • Tomorrow: More sun, but late-day thundershower possible. Highs: 78 to 83.

A big cold front sweeps through the area today, and that could set off some strong to severe storms. Stay weather aware and have a place to seek shelter if you’re outdoors and hear thunder. Between Wednesday and Friday, we settle into a cooler weather pattern, with highs mostly in the 70s. We might rebound to near 80 over the weekend, with some rain showers possible on Sunday.

Today (Monday): There may be a fair amount of cloud cover and a few passing showers or storms through midday; that might limit fuel for storms later. However, there’s a chance the sun breaks out for at least a time between midday and late afternoon. Then storm chances increase in the mid- to late afternoon but may be hit or miss. Any storms that form could be intense — with damaging winds, hail and even the outside chance of a tornado. It’s humid with highs 80 to 85. Winds are from the south at 10 to 15 mph but potentially much higher in any thunderstorms. Confidence: Medium

Tonight: Scattered storms remain possible through around sunset and may be most numerous north and east of Washington; a few could be severe. After 9 or 10 p.m., most storm activity should wind down, with lows 60 to 65. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Tuesday): It’s a little less warm and humid, and we’ll have a good deal of sun. But a weak disturbance swinging by during the afternoon could set off a few fast-moving showers or thundershowers (20 to 30 percent chance). Highs are in the upper 70s and low 80s. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Skies rapidly clear in the evening, and it’s a calm, refreshing night. Humidity drops as lows range from the mid-50s in our cooler areas to the low 60s downtown. Confidence: High

Temperatures drop another notch on Wednesday, with highs in the mid- to upper 70s. The morning looks good, but yet another disturbance swinging through during the afternoon could bring more showers and storms. Clearing and cool at night, with lows in the 50s throughout the region. Confidence: Medium-High

Thursday and Friday are the week’s nicest days and arguably some of the nicest of the spring so far. Both days bring sunshine and highs in the low 70s. Nighttime lows are in the 50s, with even some upper 40s in our cooler areas. Confidence: Medium-High

Of the weekend days, Saturday looks better right now. We should have sunny skies and highs 75 to 80 with lows dropping into the 50s at night. Sunday brings more clouds and a chance of showers, with highs again 75 to 80. Confidence: Medium
